Woking School is a
small Kindergarten to Grade Eight school, located 55 km north of Grande
Prairie, Alberta. The hamlet of Woking is well within commuting distance of
Grande Prairie, has abundant oil and gas in the area, and an economic base
provided mainly by the agricultural sector.
Woking
School has a current enrollment of 60 students and a professional staff of four
teachers, three teaching assistants and one administrative
assistant/librarian. The physical plant consists of 5 regular classrooms, a
special education room, a library, a gymnasium, and a computer room. Woking
School operates on a Compressed School Week (CSW) schedule. Our
classes begin at 8:30 am and run until 3:40 pm. Because of this
extended day, the school is closed on fifteen Fridays throughout the year.
Class sizes vary from nine to nineteen students in our double-graded
classrooms and our present kindergarten class has seven students.
The
staff of Woking School is very stable, and several staff members live within the
local farming community. The entire staff has been involved in our
Professional Learning Community project, which has focused on the Language
Arts program. See the PLC page of the Language Arts website for more
information.
The school offers
many special programs including speech pathology services, counseling,
early literacy intervention, junior high learning strategies and an
elementary swim program. Academically, our students consistently meet or
exceed standards on the annual Provincial Achievement Exams. All
students receive daily physical education classes. Students from
grades 4 to 8 have many
opportunities to participate in extra-curricular sports such as soccer,
cross-country running, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, badminton, and
slow pitch. We have an active junior high leadership class which plans
and hosts many special
events throughout the year. Some of our yearly activities include the Halloween Haunted House, Christmas Concert,
Easter Hat contest, and the Divisional Ball Tournament.
